Gwendolyn McCray will be dearly remembered after she made her earthly transition to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 16, 2022. Gwen was born in Grenada, Mississippi on December 7, 1952 to the late Alsee McCray Sr. and Minnie Mae Talford-McCray. Gwen came to Bridgeport, Connecticut at the age of two years old. She attended William Samuel Johnson Elementary School and graduated from Central High School in 1970. Gwen was an employee of the United Illuminating Company until 1993, when she relocated to Stone Mountain, Georgia, where she was employed by Comcast Cable Company. Gwen was an avid shopper and held a keen interest for fashion. She loved watching old 1940’s movies with stars such as Cary Grant, Kirk Douglas and Elizabeth Taylor. Gwen was the comedian of the family, always telling funny stories. But she was so much more than that. She was like a parent to us, and was the glue that held the family together.
Gwen leaves to cherish her memories a son, Trenice Smith Sr. of Stone Mountain, Georgia; a grandson, Trenice Smith Jr. of Bridgeport, Connecticut; two sisters, Deborah McCray-Burton of Bridgeport and Peggy Scarbrough of Bridgeport; three brothers, Alsee McCray Jr. (Valerie Rogers McCray) of Bridgeport, Kevin Dale McCray (Denisha Michelle McCray) of Warwick, Rhode Island, and Gerald McCray of Bridgeport. She also leaves to cherish her memories an extended family, George Woolfolk, Inez Scott and David Timmons, along with a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Gwen will truly be missed by two special friends of hers, Veda Cuffee-Fall and Ethel Wilder-Jackson, and many other friends. Gwen was predeceased by her sister, Alice Faye McCray; niece, Taijaih Davis; aunt, Doris Scott, Larry Scott and stepmother, Carrie McCray.
